A
TRIBUTE:
The late Hillary Intine was a brilliant teacher in his own
right and served as the director of the language and philosophy department
before his retirement he had a lifelong interest in the major spiritual
disciplines before going in to the educational field from the Catholic priesthood
training.
He spoke fluent Spanish, English, Italian and French and had a gift for
making his Spanish language classes interesting and on one occasion the
Principal of the school he taught at dropped in to pickup his grades to find
that Hillary had creatively combined a Mexican cooking class to re-enforce the
Spanish lessons, the Principal and other students all spoke Spanish well enough
to ask for seconds of the four course Mexican meal Hillary prepared with help
from the students.
An avid golf player, a devoted animal lover, gardener, and as a carpenter
he actually helped build the home he lived in for thirty something years ,
he and his wife Eleanor ushered
many performances at the nearby theater in Newbury Park California and can name
most of the major operas.
It was not uncommon for neighbors to just drop in during the day only to
find Hillary practicing his passion for Italian cooking and soon find themselves
at a huge table he built enjoying his cooking he would sing along with Pavarotti
and share a glass of his favorite wine while the meal was simmering.
He and his wife Eleanor also loved to travel in their recreational vehicle
and belonged to Brougham Roamers for decades.
When Hillary retired from a formal teaching position he again using his
carpenter skills converted a room in his home into a beautiful functional
library and filled it with all the books and a state-of-the-art computer system.
It also served as an archive for all of his important educational
achievements. One could visit the library and easily enjoy a lesson of
Philosophy, Spanish, Italian, French or hours of viewing his archives and
mementos collected from many sources the room flaunted a view of his beautiful
patio with the hand laid bricks by him the nearby hills and garden plants
including an orange tree that produced gallons of sweet juice .
When this writer had the pleasure of meeting Hillary and his lovely wife
Eleanor, the first thing I noticed was how comfortable I felt around them and
realized soon that they truly had a gift as a couple to make others feel loved
and at home.
Eleanor worked in the school transportation system for many years and
had a gift for keeping the children in place while driving them to their
educational destinations and back home.
She enjoys working crossword puzzles and has the gift of being able to
talk with anyone about anything.
